For years, I worked in church ministry with access to our ChMS data — Pushpay, CCB, attendance records, giving reports. On paper, we had everything we needed to understand how our congregation was doing.
In practice, getting a clear picture of any individual member's discipleship health required pulling data from multiple places, building custom Excel reports, and spending hours on analysis that should have taken minutes. And by the time the analysis was done, the data was already a week old.
I built the first version of what would become NextStep Metrics as an Excel-based dashboard connected to our church's APIs. It worked — our pastoral team started having better conversations, catching people who were drifting before they were gone, and actually knowing what to say when they sat down with a member.
But it wasn't something other churches could easily use. It was fragile, manual, and tied to our specific setup. So I rebuilt it as a native iOS app — something any church could pick up and use from day one, regardless of their tech stack or budget.
